Car vs. Wheel – Cape Street

At 2306 hours tonight, Goshen firefighters were called to Route 112 in the area of Sears Road for what was initially called a one car motor vehicle accident with unknown personal injuries.

When firefighters approached the scene, they noticed a Ford F350 Dually pick-up truck in the southbound lane and several individual in the nearby woods with flashlights. In the same area, an obvious fluid leak in the northbound lane led to a Volvo sedan several hundred feet down the road.

The driver of the Volvo, who is a resident of Ashfield, was on his way home when he swerved to avoid getting hit by a wheel that had fallen off the Ford pick-up only to come in contact with the second wheel from the same truck. Even though contact with the wheel caused significant damage to the front end of the Volvo, the force of the impact did not cause airbags to be deployed.

Ashfield Fire initially responded to the call when the first call to 911 incorrectly identified the location of the accident as being in that town. Once it was determined that the accident was in Goshen, Highland Ambulance and Goshen Police department personnel were also dispatched to help.

No injuries were reported from this incident.

Both vehicles were towed to Leibenow’s in Cummington.
