Fire Department Report – 1950

Source: 1950 Annual Report for the Town of Goshen

To the Board of Selectmen:

Herewith is submitted the first annual report of the activities of the Fire Department.  In less than two years as a regularly organized Fire Department we have constructed a building, purchased and equipped a 500 gallon per minute pumper and a 1000 gallon tank truck, purchased two gas masks and other items to fully equip two men for fighting fire under severe conditions, and trained men to use and operate this equipment.

This has been done at an expense to the town totaling $6,241.06.

The Fireman’s Association has contributed and individuals have contributed hundreds of hours of labor, materials, and the use of trucks of a value difficult to estimate.  The active and enthusiastic support of the Fireman’s Association means a great deal to the progress of the Fire Department in becoming a completely equipped and ready-to-go organization.

Immediate needs in the nature of additional equipment are: an adequate call and warning system, a portable pump, a pump mounted on the tank truck, more hose, and equipment for more men.

I wish to thank Chief Hathaway of Williamsburg for much valuable advice and help to us in becoming organized and buying our equipment, and Deputy Chief Charles Martin of Northampton for an excellent course of instruction and other assistance, and all others who have cooperated to give us such an excellent start at a minimum of expense.

Respectfully submitted,

THOMAS W. BARRUS

Chief of the Fire Department
