Fire Department Report – 1951

Source: 1951 Annual Town Report

To the Board of Selectmen:

Herewith is submitted the second annual report of the Fire Department.

One of the goals for which we have worked so long has been reached.  After a careful inspection by the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association the Fire Department was found to meet sufficient requirements to permit a better insurance classification with lower rates, and refunds on policies already in force.  The tank truck allows a 5% additional reduction in the insurance on farm property.

A definite financial return for the money expended can be shown which will continue to benefit nearly all the property owners of the town.

In addition to the savings we have a much greater protection against fire than ever before; the powerful new siren can call more volunteers quickly, and the portable pump can make use of water supplies not possible for the truck.

The interest of the Firemen’s Association increases in quality and quantity; its support is essential to the department.  Out of its funds it paid more than $1,000.00 for equipment for the department and improvements to the station.

To maintain requirements to keep  our present insurance rating a yearly purchase of a few lengths of hose will be necessary to add to the present supply and for replacement.  Also desirable is equipment for two men and some small miscellaneous items.

On behalf of the town I wish to express gratitude to all who have helped us in our efforts to establish a recognized Fire Department.

Respectfully submitted,

THOMAS W. BARRUS

Chief of the Fire Department
