Roger Beals, Jr., Suffers Ruptured Kidney While at Play

GOSHEN, Nov. 21 – Injured when he tripped and fell in the basement of the Goshen School yesterday afternoon, Roger Beals, seven years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dexter Beals, died this morning in Cooley Dickenson Hospital, Northampton, after an emergency operation had been performed by Dr. Lawrence Doolittle, a Springfield specialist.

Kidney Ruptured

X-ray pictures taken at the hospital this morning showed that the boy suffered a ruptured kidney, according to a report filed by State Police investigators assigned by District Atty. John W. Heselton.

The police report said that the boy was playing in the school basement when he tripped and fell on the cement floor.  Later in the afternoon, he complained to the teacher that he did not feel well and was allowed to go home.  Early last night, an Ashfield physician was summoned by the boys’ parents and the doctor ordered the injured child’s removal to the hospital.

Dr. Dolittle came to Northampton shortly after 1 this morning to perform the operation which failed to save the boy’s life.

State Police at Laurel Park indicated that Dist. Atty. Heselton was satisfied there was no criminal negligence connected with the accident.

Roger was a pupil of the second grade and leaves besides his parents, two sisters, Florence and Ida; a grandfather, Joseph Beals, and several aunts and uncles.

The funeral will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Congregational Church.  Rev. Correct Higgins will officiated burial will be in the Center Cemetery, Goshen.
