Lightning Strike Thought to be Cause of Overnight Blaze

WILLIAMSBURG, MA — A barn fire believed to have been caused by a lightning strike at 74 Petticoat Hill Road around 10 p.m. Thursday night badly damaged the barn, though it may not be a total loss.

The barn was in flames when firefighters from at least nine towns arrived. Retired Fire Chief Don Lawton, who visited the site early Friday, said that while the barn sustained substantial damage, it did not look to be a total loss.

“It looks like they did a great job knocking that fire down,” Lawton said.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Ashfield, Chesterfield, Conway, Cummington, Hatfield, Goshen, Northampton Westhampton and Williamsburg responded to the call by reporting to the scene or covering for the departments who were at the fire.

A man on the property Friday who said he was the owner of the home declined to give his name to the Gazette, though he did report that he and his wife were home when they heard and felt what they believed to be lightning striking both the house and the barn.

While no damage was done to the home, the barn, which was a few yards from the house, appeared to have suffered substantial internal damage, though the basic structure appeared salvageable.
