William J. Ames, at 56; Was Civic Leader, Coach

GOSHEN, MA – William J. Ames, 56, of 68 Main St., a civic leader and youth sports coach, died Monday at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

He was a longtime heavy-equipment operator at Smith College. He was also a stone mason.

Born in Northampton, he was a 1961 graduate of the former Williamsburg High School. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in the Haydenville section of Williamsburg, a former member of the Goshen Fire and Police departments and a Public Library trustee.

He also president and coach of the Hilltown Little League and worked with the Goshen Recreation Association.

He leaves his wife, the former Beverly Morin; three sons, Randolph of Montague, Patrick of Westfield and Scott of Chesterfield; his mother, Marian Ames of the Florence section of Northampton; a brother, Lawrence of Florida; a sister, Victoria Hart of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday morning at Childs Funeral Home and the church, both in Haydenville, with burial in Goshen Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday afternoon and evening.
