Wires Down and on Fire

GOSHEN, MA – A late season winter storm visited the region overnight on Wednesday leaving the roads covered in an inch of slush and trees and power lines with ice. Once casualty of the storm was a power line on Old Goshen Road carrying 8,000 volts of electricity.

Goshen fire department personnel responded to the scene, closed the roadway and stood watch until workers from National Grid repaired the line.

Goshen firefighters apply foam to the area where the downed wires were burning to cool it down.

This video provides a look at why firefighters treat all down wires as being live and shows the results of what happens when they come in contact with the ground.
