Army Truck Crash Blocks Rte. 9

Sunday Republican (Springfield, MA)

GOSHEN, MA – An army truck crashed into a utility pole on Route 9 yesterday, forcing officials to reroute traffic through the center of town for about three hours.

According to a bystander, the accident took place about 3 p.m. Robert Szafran, pastor of the Goshen Congregational Church, said he was out mowing the lawn across the street from town hall when he heard the crash.

“I looked up and the pole was wobbling, so I knew something happened,” he said.

Szafran said no one appeared to be injured and police and fire officials quickly blocked off the road as they awaited work crews from the power company. State and local police, firefighters and Army personnel were all at the scene but officials would not provide access to them for information. Fire Chief Francis Dresser said later that officials reopened one lane of Route 9 between 5 and 6 p.m. Dresser referred all other questions to Police Chief Nancy Forrestall, who could not be reached for comment last night.
