Chimney Fire Olympics

GOSHEN, MA – Right in the middle of watching the Olympic snowboard competition and thinking of how nice and warm it was in our houses, Goshen firefighters were called to extinguish a chimney fire on West Street.

With temperatures in the teens, one ladder was extended to the side of the house along with a roof ladder up to its peak. Buried under the 11″ of snow Goshen received this week were two skylights. Lucky for us, the homeowner told us about them so we knew ahead of time to watch our step.

Smoldering firewood was removed from the wood stove along with several buckets of creosote that was brushed down the chimney by the firefighters on the roof.  A positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fan was used to clear the smoke filled house much to the delight of the very appreciative homeowners.

After we returned to quarters, we were happy to hear that an American finished with a gold medal in the snowboard competition.
