SOUTHAMPTON, MA – Fire damaged a detached garage next to a home at 41 Cold Spring Road yesterday, the fire chief said.

The homeowners were burning brush in their backyard when a passerby noticed smoke coming from the garage and called 911 at 2:20 p.m., said Southampton Fire Chief Robert W. Barcomb.

The garage was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. They managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the house, which was 40 feet away, but the blaze damaged the garage and a tractor, tools and equipment inside it, Barcomb said.

Easthampton, Westhampton and Goshen firefighters provided mutual aid.
