Goshen fire shows small town has huge heart: Viewpoint

GOSHEN, MA – Cynthia Simison, assistant to the publisher and managing editor of The Republican newspaper, writes a beautiful article which captures the thoughts and fears of the Judd family from the perspective of Phil Judd’s mother and father Linda and Fran Judd.

Phil and Jess Judd lost their home to a fire last weekend but their family, which includes four boys under the age of 10, were able to escape thanks to working smoke detectors, quick thinking and a nod to the regular safety lessons taught by Fire Chief Sue Labrie and other volunteers from the Chesterfield and Goshen fire departments.

While fighting the fire as Fran’s ancestral home, we noticed him standing across the street almost for the entire duration looking on.  The article sheds light on why he was there.

While fighting the fire at Phil & Jess’s home, we wondered about how our community could help them get through this setback.  The article outlines what transpired in the subsequent days.

Ms. Simison paints a picture of life in the Hilltowns of western MA that many of us who live here are nodding our heads to because we know it, we live it and we cherish it.
