ASHFIELD, MA – Several brush fires kept firefighters busy across the county yesterday, with the largest blackening about 10 acres in Ashfield.

It took about 60 firemen from Ashfield, Buckland, Plainfield, Goshen, and the state Forestry Department about four hours to douse the brush fire on Beldingville Road, said Ashfield Fire Chief Doug Field.

He said that it was a permitted fire which got out of control.

He said there were no injuries or damage other than to the land.

There was also a one-acre fire on Highland Avenue, Montague Center, that was apparently started by a cigarette, and a small brush fire in Greenfield near the Green River that was quickly extinguished by firemen.
