GOSHEN, MA – It is with great sadness that the Goshen Fire Department announces the death of Captain Stephen H. Mollison. Steve passed away on February 18th, 2011 at Baystate Medical Center after suffering a medical emergency while working at the town transfer station. Steve was a 47-year member of the Department and was the long-time president of the Goshen Firefighters Association.
The value of a person can best be measured by the legacy they leave behind. For the Goshen Fire Department, the contributions of Captain Steve Mollison will be measured for years to come. As a member of the department for almost five decades, we could count on Steve to make his way to the station in his black Chevy pick-up truck when the call came in. As his family can attest, Steve responded whether it was day or night, raining or snowing, in Goshen or for mutual aid to another town. If there was a call, the rest of us knew we’d be seeing him in one of the trucks. Steve was also one of our go-to guys. He knew how to fix just about anything. If he didn’t know how to fix something, he knew someone who could. It also mattered to Steve that American flags were put up in the center of town for holidays and that American flags were placed in the cemetery each spring at the graves of former Goshen firefighters interred there. This is something he took pride in each year as he marched in the Memorial Day parade in Goshen and the 4th of July parade in Chesterfield. Steve participated in department training even if he knew the material like the back of his hand. The knowledge he gained was passed on to our junior firefighters and new recruits. The memories he created in the lives of so many will be cherished by those of us fortunate enough to have known him as a friend.
